Gothic
You probably thinking of the dark, dull emotionless gothic but this is not the same, they are actually complete opposites. The Medieval gothic period started from the 12th century to the 14th century, which was when the real change in art began as it was the typical art in the Byzantine and Romanesque art. Gothic art starting evolving within the ending of the Romanesque time period. Near the end of the Gothic art time period it became popular and spread through all of Europe, it was called International Gothic because it had amore natural feel to it.

During this times art wasn't the same as it was in the Byzantine and Romanesque period, people took a whole new perspective when it reached the Gothic time period. They started judging the art by the materials used instead of the general art work, along with the style the artist has used the material was another important factor to remember when judging a Gothic artwork.
